Identification of Noise Acceptance Onset for Noise Certification Standards of Supersonic Airplanes

Project Number: 041
Category: Noise

For the future civil supersonic aircraft, appropriately assessing low level sonic boom noise remains a technological challenge for both certification and evaluation of community impact. Previous research from Pennsylvania State University advanced the understanding of the public’s perception of sonic boom noise and the appropriateness of metrics used to measure sonic boom.

This project continues to build upon these results, specifically analyzing the certification metrics when analyzing sonic boom. The Penn State team will evaluate the use of single event metrics, the removal of turbulence effects from measurements, and the optimal locations of microphones during measurement. The team will also continue to conduct research and identify methods  for future testing to evaluate the impact of low level sonic booms on communities.
