Aircraft Noise Abatement Procedure Modeling and Validation

Project Number: 044
Category: Noise, Operations

This project will develop an approach to modeling and validating advanced operational flight procedures that incorporate modified configurations and speeds. Noise analysis developed at MIT under ASCENT Project 23 shows opportunities to reduce community noise under flight tracks from configuration and speed changes. Analysis results indicate that techniques such as delaying landing gear and flap extension can significantly reduce noise population exposure. There may be additional opportunities to reduce noise through other procedure changes. This project will develop test plans for data mining of operational data to identify noise abatement opportunities and potential flight demonstrations of high potential procedures.
